Film Notes

We visited the ARISAWA Innovation Center in late February, when the first subtle hints of spring were beginning to stir. Snow still lingered on the six roofs reminiscent of lotus leaves. Capturing the winter snow to harness its cooling energy in the summer, this architecture designed by Tetsuo Kobori embodies ingenious mechanisms that treat the harsh environment of snow country as a vital resource.
Inside, massive concrete columns rise through the ceiling to catch the light streaming from the clerestory windows. Daylight grazing the bush-hammered concrete surfaces shifts with the passing hours, constantly lending varied expressions to the columns. Around them unfolds an interconnected spatial volume where activities across upper and lower floors become visible through atriums and stairways.
In this film, we focused on the commanding presence of the columns and the sightlines opening around them. Drawing close to the light-washed texture of the concrete before shifting perspective to the spaces continuing beyond, the drone navigates between the snow-gathering roofs outside and the light-receiving pillars within, translating the architecture's environmental dialogue into a vivid spatial experience.
