Nagasaki DEJIMA

Film Notes

For 218 years during Japan’s period of national seclusion, Dejima served as the country’s only gateway open to Western Europe. Built in Nagasaki in 1636, the fan-shaped artificial island became a center of trade and cultural exchange after the Dutch trading post was relocated there in 1641. The film moves continuously through the Main Gate, central street, Sea Gate, Chief Factor’s Residence, Japanese Officials’ Quarters, and other spaces. By carrying the viewer’s perspective between interior and exterior, it traces the memories of trade, everyday life, and cultural exchange as a single, continuous spatial experience. Although land reclamation from the Meiji period onward erased Dejima’s original island form, the City of Nagasaki began its restoration project in 1951. The work has been supported by extensive scholarly research, including archaeological excavations, historical maps and records, early photographs, the Blomhoff Model of Dejima, and comparative studies of traditional architecture. At Dejima, traditional Japanese timber construction and tatami interiors coexist with Western furniture, imported goods, karakami decorative paper, and hand-blown glass. Its restoration seeks not only to reconstruct lost buildings, but also to revive the memory of a place where Japan and Europe once encountered one another. The project continues today, with the aim of restoring Dejima’s former appearance as an island surrounded by the sea.
