Nestled in the greenery of Mount Godai in Kochi City, the Makino Botanical Garden (Makino Museum of Plants and People) was designed by Hiroshi Naito. Walking on the ground, one rarely has the opportunity to overlook the entire building or the curves of its roof. Raising the perspective with a drone reveals the previously unseen curvature of the roof, illuminating its relationship with the topography and surrounding trees. Through filming, one feels how this design was born from embracing the nature of this place. Inside, moving through the rhythmically sequenced timber frame, the video traces spaces of varying ceiling heights. Beyond the low openings lies lush greenery; more than a quarter of a century after completion, the mature trees add even greater beauty to the scenery viewed through the architecture. We sought to convey both the space experienced by visitors and the building's form that is difficult to see from the ground. Overlooking the roof and surrounding forest, passing through the timber framework, and gazing out at the greenery through openings, navigating the space from various heights and angles captures the three-dimensional relationship between the Makino Botanical Garden and nature.
